Milan council session suspended over Turin TAV protest violence

Mayor Giuseppe Sala of Milan condemned the recent No‑TAV attacks in the Val di Susa as criminal acts, saying the left is not indulgent toward the violence. He made the remarks at a ceremony commemorating the Via Palestro massacre and warned against glorifying the clashes.

In the Milan City Council meeting, the session was halted for more than an hour as right‑wing councillors displayed orange signs reading “Sì TAV, no violenza” and shouted accusations against the governing majority. Left‑wing groups responded with anti‑violence placards. The debate followed weekend incidents at the Turin‑Lyon high‑speed rail (TAV) construction site, where protesters injured police officers. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Infrastructure Minister Matteo Piantedosi visited the site, while Turin mayor Stefano Lo Russo was also cited in the discussion.

Council members demanded further information on the weekend attacks, highlighting the political tension surrounding the TAV project and the broader issue of protest‑related violence in Italy.
