Milan security plan deployed following urban unrest

Milan authorities have launched an extraordinary security plan to prevent further civil unrest following recent violence and property damage. The deployment includes 5,000 law enforcement officers and 500 paratroopers from the Folgore brigade, who are being moved from Siena to the city.

The security measures, operating under the ‘Strade Sicure’ framework, involve local police utilizing drones for city surveillance and patrolling. Authorities are also implementing station checks for travelers and deploying mobile emergency teams to cover various city quadrants, particularly the historic center and Piazza Duomo.

Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi described the recent phenomenon as ‘unprecedented and extremely insidious.’ Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala noted that only 20% of those previously detained were Milan residents, suggesting the unrest involves many youths from surrounding provinces. Officials expressed concern that similar gatherings may be planned for other Lombardy cities.
