Milan faces growing inequality as housing costs soar

Milan is experiencing a profound divide between its status as a global hub for luxury, fashion, and investment and the economic reality of its residents. While the city attracts millionaires through Italy’s flat tax incentives, local citizens are increasingly being priced out of the center.

Real estate data indicates that home purchase prices have risen 57% over the last decade, while rental costs have increased by 70% since 2018. This has resulted in a wage-to-housing cost ratio that the Financial Times reports is now worse than London’s. This crisis is compounded by stagnant Italian wages, which have not grown in 25 years compared to a 35% increase across the rest of the OECD, and a lack of a statutory minimum wage.

Social unrest has manifested in recent weekend protests where approximately 2,000 youths from the metropolitan periphery stormed the city center, smashing shop windows and stealing branded goods. The displacement of the population to the surrounding metropolitan area has intensified the social friction between the city's luxury sectors and its excluded working class.
