Milan families affected by seized construction sites urge Mayor Giuseppe Sala for legal protection
The Committee of Suspended Families, representing thousands of Milan residents whose newly purchased homes are tied up in construction sites seized by the public prosecutor, sent an open letter to Mayor Giuseppe Sala. The families, who have been paying mortgages for up to two years without being able to occupy the properties, demand concrete legal safeguards, financial guarantees and psychological support similar to the "legal shield" already granted to staff of the urban planning office under investigation.
The letter cites earlier promises by the mayor in September 2025 and January 2026 to resolve the issue, noting that the construction sites remain blocked and families remain in limbo. It asks the city to provide legal assistance, reimburse legal costs, and ensure timely solutions for the affected households.
The appeal underscores the widening gap between protections for municipal employees and the lack of support for the families left with unpaid mortgages and uncertain housing prospects.
