Milan implements tactical school plaza in Portello area

In Milan, the Portello area has undergone a localized transformation through the creation of a tactical school plaza. Located at the intersection of via Gattamelata, via Faravelli, and piazzale Stefano Türr in Municipality 8, the project aims to improve safety and livability near several educational institutions, including the Pietro Micca primary school and Gattamelata kindergarten.

The initiative, which originated from a 2023 application to the ‘Piazze aperte per ogni scuola’ call, addresses local issues such as traffic congestion, irregular parking, dangerous crossings, and insufficient pedestrian space. The intervention utilizes colored surfaces, seating, and specific equipment to signal a change in space usage, though it does not constitute a full pedestrianization of the entire neighborhood.
