Tuberculosis outbreak confirmed at Milan Institute of Legal Medicine

A tuberculosis outbreak has been confirmed at the Institute of Legal Medicine of the State University of Milan. The Agenzia di Tutela della Salute (ATS) has identified eight active cases among medical residents, specialists, and other staff members. Additionally, seven other individuals have tested positive for latent infection, indicating contact with the Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacterium without active disease.

Health authorities are conducting extensive epidemiological screening, including Mantoux skin tests and blood tests (IGRA), to identify all potentially exposed individuals. The investigation is expected to take two to three weeks to provide a complete picture. While the exact source of the infection remains unknown, reports suggest the outbreak may have originated during an autopsy performed on a cadaver with suspected tuberculosis.

The Associazione Liberi Specializzandi (ALS) has raised concerns regarding safety protocols and the adequacy of training for residents handling biological materials, subsequently filing a formal complaint. The University of Milan has launched internal inquiries into the matter. Medical experts, including representatives from the Associazione Microbiologi Clinici Italiani (AMCLI), have advised against alarmism, noting that tuberculosis is a manageable disease and that those with latent infections are not currently contagious.
