Croatia waste scandal: USKOK expands investigation into illegal disposal

USKOK has expanded its investigation into a major illegal waste disposal scheme involving 14 individuals and four legal entities. The investigation focuses on the illegal burial and disposal of hazardous waste in Gospić, Benkovac, and Senj, including within the Velebit Nature Park.

Recent arrests include Paško Dodić, a Zagreb jeweler, and Željko Teufel of the company CE-ZA-R. Other suspects include Snježana Tomljanović, director of the Senj Municipal Utility Company, and Toni Žunić. Investigators allege that approximately 6,500 tons of waste were buried at a quarry in Benkovac, and at least 2,890.23 tons of hazardous waste were disposed of at the Senj landfill.

Secretly recorded conversations from 2024 reportedly revealed how waste shipments were coordinated. The suspects face charges of environmental crimes and the forgery of official or business documents as part of a criminal organization. USKOK has not proposed pretrial detention for the suspects, stating there is no basis for it at this time.
