Milan Kučan analyzes the breakup of Yugoslavia

Former Slovenian President Milan Kučan has provided an analysis regarding the dissolution of Yugoslavia and the potential for reform within the former state. Kučan, a key figure during the transition from the Yugoslav order to independence, noted that Yugoslavia was in a constant state of reform to justify its existence, a process heavily influenced by Edvard Kardelj.

He observed that the stability of the state relied on the collective will and interest of the constituent republics. According to Kučan, the collapse became inevitable once the unifying forces—including the ideology of the League of Communists, socialism, the concept of brotherhood and unity, the market, and the personality of Josip Broz Tito—ceased to hold the community together.
