Milan Kučan criticizes Slovenian ruling coalition

Slovenia’s first president, Milan Kučan, has issued a sharp critique of the current ruling coalition, warning of a drift toward autocracy. Speaking at a ceremony commemorating the Brežice Company, Kučan cautioned against ideological revisionism and the abuse of democratic instruments.

Kučan specifically highlighted concerns regarding pressure on the judiciary and public media, the blurring of legislative content through new referendum initiatives, and the subordination of national interests to foreign interests. He urged citizens to prevent a segment of the political elite from “stealing the state,” emphasizing that the foundation of Slovenian statehood must remain resistance rather than collaboration.

In a separate discussion regarding upcoming elections, Kučan noted that current political choices represent a critical divide between paths that benefit Slovenia and Europe versus those that lead to a negative future. He also expressed concern over global instability and leaders who deny scientific findings, such as climate change, and rely solely on power.
