Milan launches international design competitions for Zama‑Salomone and Porto di Mare districts

The Municipality of Milan has opened two international design competitions to create masterplans for the Zama‑Salomone and Porto di Mare areas, the two largest public zones covered by the city’s “Piano Straordinario Casa”. Approved in October 2025, the plan allocates surface‑rights for social housing and aims to provide affordable rental units for middle‑income families.

The contests, titled “Milan for Accessible Living”, are hosted on the certified platform concorrimi, managed by the Order of Architects, Planners, Landscape Architects and Conservators of the Province of Milan. They invite Italian and foreign architects and planners to propose innovative, sustainable, high‑quality solutions that integrate housing with public spaces, green areas and shared energy systems. As assessor Emmanuel Conte explained, “We want to understand how Milan will live in 2040 – not only how many homes are built, but how public spaces, mobility, greenery and energy sharing will look.” Order president Francesca Scotti added, “We hope the winning masterplans become real projects.”
