Milan leads Italy in sports ranking as regional events boost Lombardy
A recent analysis by Il Sole 24 Ore placed Milan at the top of Italy’s sports index, with Bergamo and Sondrio also ranking among the highest provinces. The ranking considered the number of clubs, registered athletes, national results and recent investments, highlighting the legacy of the recent Winter Olympics. Federica Picchi, sub‑secretary for Sport and Youth Policies in Lombardy, noted the positive impact of the Games on local sport development.
In Sondrio, the city will host the regional junior‑senior canoe championship on 6 September, organized by Addavì in partnership with Polisportiva Albosaggia. The sprint races will take place on the Adda River near Parco Bartesaghi. Sports assessor Michele Diasio said the municipality will continue to support high‑level events and has invested in facilities such as the Munari gym and the under‑construction PalaMerizzi. Sondrio has previously hosted world rafting championships, the World Winter Master Games, European fly‑fishing contests and the Tour de Suisse, featuring riders like Tadej Pogačar.
