Milan Milišić: Remembering the poet killed during the shelling of Dubrovnik

The anniversary of the death of Milan Milišić, a prominent Yugoslav poet, essayist, translator, and journalist, is being marked. Milišić was killed on October 5, 1991, during the shelling of Dubrovnik, when a shell exploded in the courtyard of his home in Župska Street.

Considered one of the first civilian victims of the attack on Dubrovnik, Milišić was of Serbian origin and a member of literary associations in both Serbia and Croatia. Action for Human Rights (HRA) noted that his death highlights the absurdity of the war, as a writer of Serbian descent was among the first killed during an operation framed as protecting Serbs.

A memorial plaque was previously unveiled at his former residence to honor his memory. His widow, painter and professor Jelena Trpković, recently published a memoir titled ‘Takva su vremena (1989 – 2006)’, which documents their life in Dubrovnik and the subsequent war years.
