Bari student attacked in Rossani Park sustains facial fractures; police identify suspects

A 26‑year‑old philosophy student at the University of Bari was assaulted in the Rossani public park on 23 July 2026 while using the restroom. She says two adults and a group of minors aged 8‑14 surrounded her, threw her to the ground and kicked her face, causing a fractured nasal septum, an orbital wall injury and a 40‑day medical prognosis. The victim called emergency services herself, was treated at the Policlinico, and posted a video of her injuries on social media.

Local police have opened an investigation and have already identified several perpetrators. Initial reports mentioned ten minors and two adult parents; later updates confirmed three individuals are under investigation for aggravated assault, with additional suspects being sought. The mayor of Bari, Vito Leccese, and the regional Garante Minori have publicly expressed solidarity, called for stronger safety measures in public spaces, and urged preventive actions to address youth violence.

The incident has sparked community concern, with local organisations, political figures and civil society demanding increased surveillance and educational interventions to curb similar attacks in public parks.
