Milan pedestrianization project improves local air quality

Monitoring data from the Agency for Mobility, Environment, and Territory (AMAT) confirms that the pedestrianization and tactical urbanism project in Milan has significantly improved air quality. The intervention, which created a school plaza between via Corridoni, via Respighi, and via Savarè, has led to a measurable reduction in atmospheric pollutants near the Istituto Omnicomprensivo Musicale Statale.

Dynamic street-level measurements show that PM10 exposure decreased by up to 20% in via Savarè, while total suspended particulates (TSP) fell by up to 30% in via Corridoni. The benefits extended to adjacent areas, with via Conservatorio recording a 22% drop in PM10 and a 30% reduction in TSP.

Static monitoring conducted on the second floor of the local music institute also revealed that daily pollutant peaks, typically occurring between 10:00 and 11:00 AM, were less pronounced following the intervention. Additionally, a systematic reduction in finer particles, such as PM2.5 and PM1, was observed.
