Milan stock index falls amid US-Iran tensions and rising gold prices
The Milan stock exchange fell by 0.3% on August 24, 2026, driven by investor caution regarding geopolitical tensions between the United States and Iran following the announcement of new sanctions against Tehran. This uncertainty has pushed capital toward safe-haven assets, causing gold prices to rise by 0.7% to $4,675 per ounce.
In the energy sector, gas prices rose by 4% to 68.56 euro/MWh, while WTI crude oil dropped 1.3% to $85.88 per barrel. Major losses in the Milan index were led by Prysmian (-4.9%), Avio (-4.7%), Stellantis (-3.2%), and STM (-2%). Conversely, the banking and insurance sectors showed resilience, with Intesa Sanpaolo and Generali posting gains of 0.4% and 0.5% respectively.
