Milan to honor prison reformer Francesco Di Cataldo

The city of Milan will hold a civic ceremony in November to honor the centenary of Francesco Di Cataldo, a major figure in prison reform. Di Cataldo, a former deputy commander of guards at the San Vittore prison, was killed by the Brigate Rosse terrorist group on April 20, 1978.

Di Cataldo is remembered for his efforts to improve the physical and mental health of inmates and for introducing work programs within the prison system. The upcoming commemoration aims to use his legacy to spark public reflection on modern penitentiary challenges, including structural overcrowding and the quality of detention conditions.
