Milan updates Climate City Contract to drive decarbonization

Milan has introduced the updated edition of the Climate City Contract, a strategic document designed to guide the city toward climate neutrality as part of the European Union’s “100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities” mission. The contract is signed by the municipal administration alongside various stakeholders, including local authorities, universities, and private companies such as Siemens, Edison Next, and IED Milano.

The 2026 update expands the city's portfolio of projects and includes 42 new actions, with a significant focus on the construction sector and the energy efficiency of public residential buildings. The initiative aims to establish new models of climate governance through collaboration between European institutions, the national government, and the economic system.

In parallel to these municipal strategic efforts, there is a growing industrial emphasis on measuring the Carbon Footprint of Products (CFP). Analysis by the consultancy firm Ollum indicates that quantifying greenhouse gas emissions for individual components, electronic devices, and construction materials is becoming essential. This shift is driven by increasing demands from international markets, supply chains, and new European regulatory requirements, moving companies from general emission knowledge to detailed product-level data.
