Milano Cortina 2026: Olympic costs rise to 3.62 billion euros

A report by Libera and the Open Olympics 2026 network reveals significant financial and logistical challenges regarding the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics. The total plan for works has risen to 3.62 billion euros, with costs increasing by approximately 210 million euros over the last two years.

Lombardy has seen the highest cost increases, totaling 50 million euros. Notably, road redevelopment in the Busto Arsizio/Gallarate/Cardano area saw costs nearly double, rising by 49 million euros. The report indicates that 18 out of 29 works are behind schedule, with some delays exceeding one year.

Financial stability is a major concern, as the Fondazione Milano Cortina is projected to close 2025 with a cumulative deficit of 176.5 million euros and total debts exceeding 1 billion euros. In response, Libera is calling for a moratorium on unstarted construction sites, greater transparency regarding public guarantees for rising costs, and a reform of large-scale event governance.
