Milan transport authority rejects tram terminal move amid new San Siro stadium plans

The Azienda Trasporti Milanesi (ATM) has opposed the proposed relocation of the line‑16 tram terminus from Piazza Axum to Piazzale Segesta. ATM argues that the new site can accommodate only a single tram vehicle, limiting operational capacity and undermining service upgrades needed for the expected traffic generated by the new San Siro stadium, which will host football and other events for the Milano‑Cortina 2026 Winter Games.

The objection is part of a broader set of comments from public bodies—including ARPA, ATS, the Lombardy Region and the city of Milan—submitted to the municipality during the strategic environmental assessment phase. Officials note the lack of detailed traffic and congestion studies for the stadium complex, which also includes offices and residential units, and stress that a comprehensive transport‑capacity analysis must be completed before construction can proceed.
