Milano Porta Garibaldi station fire disrupts train services
A fire erupted on the morning of 30 July in the Mirabello tunnel near track 20 at Milano Porta Garibaldi station. A thick column of black smoke was visible from a distance, prompting the deployment of five fire engines, five ambulances and two medical cars. Three firefighters suffered smoke intoxication, but no passengers were seriously injured. A man aged about 50 was rescued and taken to hospital for smoke inhalation.
The incident forced the closure of track 20 and caused extensive disruptions across the Milan rail network. Delays of up to 140 minutes and numerous cancellations affected regional and long‑distance services, especially routes to Malpensa, Varesotto and the Alto Milanese area.
