Milano Serravalle begins drone trial on A7 to boost road safety

Milano Serravalle – Milano Tangenziali has started a six‑month experimental programme using two remotely‑piloted drones to monitor traffic on the A7 highway between Milan and Serravalle. The drones operate from automated stations near the Barriera di Milano Ovest bottleneck and the Bereguardo‑Pavia interchange, providing high‑altitude, real‑time video to the traffic‑control centre.

The goal is to improve safety on a route that carries about 41 million vehicles a year and recorded roughly 18 000 traffic‑related events in the past twelve months. Drones can perform scheduled patrols and on‑demand flights to support incident response, congestion management and obstacle detection. After the trial, the operator plans to expand the fleet to four aircraft in the first quarter of 2027, making aerial monitoring a regular part of highway management.
