Milan's aging car fleet pushes insurance premiums higher

A recent Facile.it analysis of more than two million auto insurance quotes shows that the average age of vehicles in Milan is now about 11 years and one month, making it the youngest city in Lombardy. Across the region the average vehicle age is close to 12 years, up 2 % year‑on‑year, with the province of Sondrio reporting the oldest fleet at roughly 14½ years.

The study links older cars to higher insurance costs: a 10‑year‑old vehicle carries an average liability premium of €461, which rises to €559 for a 12‑year‑old and €575 for a 14‑year‑old. It also notes a surge in demand for optional roadside‑assistance coverage, climbing from 47.7 % of policies last year to 63 % in April 2026.

These trends suggest that vehicle aging is increasing maintenance and fuel consumption, while also raising insurance expenses for drivers in Milan and the wider Lombardy region.
