Milas coal supply expropriation lawsuit reaches Council of State

A legal case regarding the urgent expropriation of lands used to supply coal to the Yeniköy and Kemerköy thermal power plants in the Milas district of Muğla has commenced at the Council of State (Danıştay).

Local residents and members of the TES-İŞ union gathered in Ankara to express concerns over the potential impact of the ruling. Union representatives and local village heads argued that while protecting olive groves is important, the mining operations have been a primary source of livelihood for over 40 years. They emphasized that canceling the expropriation could threaten the jobs and livelihoods of more than 3,100 workers.

On the other hand, legal experts from the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources and the General Directorate of Mining and Petroleum Affairs (MAPEG) have argued for the necessity of the thermal plants' continued operation. They have requested that the decision to halt the urgent expropriation be overturned to ensure energy supply security. A decision from the Council of State is expected within 10 to 15 days.
