Milas seagrass rehabilitation project achieves 90 percent success rate

The final academic report for the Posidonia oceanica (seagrass) Protection and Rehabilitation Project in Milas, Muğla, has been completed, demonstrating a 90 percent success rate in seagrass cluster survival.

Conducted by Yeniköy Kemerköy Enerji in collaboration with Eastern Mediterranean University and under the coordination of the Muğla Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry, the project has spanned over three years. In an area of approximately 8 hectares, more than 200 seagrass clusters were relocated to new habitats, with 90 percent maintaining healthy lives. Additionally, 1,300 seedlings planted using implantation methods showed a 70 percent survival rate.

The project utilized transplantation and implantation methods at various depths, with long-term monitoring involving chlorophyll analysis, growth, and health parameters. Researchers noted that the scientific data and monitoring methodology developed through this study could serve as a reference model for similar marine restoration efforts across the Mediterranean Sea.
