Milena Vainieri Co‑Chairs Lancet Commission on European Health Union

Professor Milena Vainieri, a full professor and scientific director of the Management and Health Laboratory at the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna in Pisa, has been appointed Co‑Chair of the new Lancet Commission dedicated to the European Health Union. The commission brings together 23 experts selected from 15 European countries, including fellow Italian representative Alice Borghini of the national health agency AGENAS.

The body will produce a report with concrete recommendations to elevate health as a strategic priority for the European Union, improving pandemic preparedness, social cohesion, economic and climate‑related resilience, innovation, and Europe’s role in global health. Its work is organized into seven thematic areas: governance of the European Health Union, added value of health integration, social cohesion and inequality reduction, resilience to health, economic and climate crises, health and European competitiveness, Health‑in‑All‑Policies, and the EU’s global health role. Vainieri said the commission aims to show that “health is a strategic lever for European integration, competitiveness and resilience to major risks such as pandemics and climate change.”
