Milena Zupančič, legendary Slovenian actress, passes away

Milena Zupančič, a legendary Slovenian actress and icon of Yugoslav cinema and theater, has passed away at the age of 79 or 80 following a long illness. Her career spanned over five decades, during which she performed more than 120 theater roles and over 80 film and television roles.

Zupančič was widely recognized for her portrayal of Mete in the 1973 film ‘Cvijeće u jeseni’ (Flowers in Autumn). She was a prominent member of the SNG Drama Ljubljana and had worked with the Ljubljana City Theatre and the Slovenian Youth Theatre. Her extensive body of work earned her Slovenia’s highest cultural honors, including the Prešeren Award for lifetime achievement, the Borštnik Ring, and the Golden Order of Merit of the Republic of Slovenia.

Beyond her acting, she was a long-time UNICEF ambassador. Tributes from colleagues, including actor Rade Šerbedžija and Slovenian President Nataša Pirc Musar, highlighted her immense talent, warmth, and profound impact on the cultural landscape of the region.
