Miles Davis centenary celebrated at BBC Proms

The BBC Proms held a concert at the Royal Albert Hall to celebrate the centenary of jazz legend Miles Davis. The performance featured trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire, who took on Davis’s role, accompanied by a quartet including pianist Taylor Eigsti, bassist Harish Raghavan, and drummer Kendrick Scott.

Conductor Miho Hazama led the BBC Concert Orchestra, performing re-orchestrated arrangements of music from Davis’s collaborations with Gil Evans. The repertoire included selections from the ‘great five’ albums: ‘Birth of the Cool’, ‘Miles Ahead’, ‘Porgy and Bess’, ‘Sketches of Spain’, and ‘Quiet Nights’. The program also incorporated works by Gershwin and Rodrigo.

The event included a discussion on the life and career of Miles Davis featuring author George Cole.
