Milica Stojadinović Srpkinja: The pioneering Serbian poet and war reporter

Milica Stojadinović Srpkinja, a prominent historical figure known as the ‘Vrdnička vila’, was a pioneering Serbian poet and the first female war reporter in the Balkans. Born in 1828 in Vrdnik on Fruška Gora, she rose to literary prominence at the age of nineteen, gaining recognition across Europe for her patriotic verses.

During her lifetime, she maintained connections with several influential intellectuals and leaders. Vuk Karadžić regarded her as a daughter, and Prince Mihailo Obrenović served as her patron. Her work and presence also drew admiration from Petar II Petrović Njegoš and various European writers, including Ivan Mažuranić and Božena Němcová.
