France Mirage 2000D fighter jet crash kills crew member

A Mirage 2000D fighter jet belonging to the French Air and Space Force crashed during a night training mission near Nancy, in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department, on Tuesday night. The aircraft, operating from the Nancy-Ochey air base, was returning from a non-armed training flight when contact was lost.

Authorities have confirmed the death of one crew member. The aircraft was occupied by a young trainee pilot and a highly experienced weapons systems officer. Preliminary findings suggest that at least one of the occupants was unable to eject before the impact. Search and rescue operations have been deployed across a 15-kilometer perimeter to locate the second crew member.

Local residents reported hearing a loud explosion and seeing a fireball in the sky. A judicial investigation and a safety inquiry have been launched to determine the cause of the accident. The Mirage 2000D is a dual-seat combat aircraft that has been in service since 1993.
