Galápagos emergency: floods cause deaths and widespread damage
Intense rainfall and flooding in the Galápagos archipelago, particularly on Santa Cruz Island, have resulted in at least nine deaths and left approximately 46,000 people affected across Ecuador. The emergency, linked to El Niño weather patterns, has caused significant damage to infrastructure, including the destruction of dozens of homes and the disruption of essential services.
In response, the Ecuadorian government has activated an emergency air bridge. The Ecuadorian Air Force has deployed C-130 Hercules aircraft to transport tens of thousands of pounds of humanitarian aid, including food, water, medicine, and sleeping kits. Local authorities have also established temporary shelters, with at least 80 people seeking refuge in a local coliseum.
Critical infrastructure has been impacted: the Baltra airport briefly suspended operations, water supply networks in Puerto Ayora were disconnected, and several tourist sites were closed preventively. While electricity has been partially restored in some urban and rural areas of Santa Cruz, heavy machinery is being deployed to clear roads and restore connectivity.
