Military compensation and recruitment standards in Spain and the U.S

Military compensation structures and recruitment standards are being highlighted in Spain and the United States.

In Spain, military salaries saw increases in 2025, a move intended to align with EU and NATO defense spending goals. The total expenditure for these increases is approximately 400 million euros per year. Specifically, personnel in the ranks and marineria received a monthly increase of 300 euros, while other members received 200 euros. Compensation is divided into base salary, seniority, extraordinary payments, and various supplements based on professional categories ranging from C2 to A1.

In the United States, the Department of Defense continues voluntary recruitment for the U.S. Army through 2026. Entry-level soldiers with less than two years of service start with a base salary of $2,407 per month. Additional benefits include allowances for housing (BAH) and food (BAS), as well as potential enlistment bonuses for high-demand technical specialties. Requirements for applicants include being between 17 and 42 years old, holding U.S. citizenship or a green card, and possessing a high school diploma or GED. Candidates must also pass the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) and undergo medical and physical evaluations.
