Military court reduces sentences in Andrie Yunus acid attack case

The High Military Court II Jakarta has issued an appeal verdict regarding the acid attack on KontraS Vice Coordinator Andrie Yunus, reducing sentences and canceling military dismissals for two perpetrators.

Under the new ruling, Serda Edi Sudarko’s sentence was reduced from three years to two and a half years, and Lettu Budhi Hariyanto Widhi’s sentence was reduced from two and a half years to two years. Crucially, the court overturned the previous order for both soldiers to be dishonorably discharged from military service. The sentences for Kapten Nandala Dwi Prasetya and Lettu Sami Lakka remained unchanged from the initial ruling.

Civil society coalitions have strongly condemned the decision, arguing it reinforces impunity and fails to provide justice for the permanent injuries suffered by the human rights defender. Activists are calling on the Supreme Court and Judicial Commission to investigate the judges' legal reasoning. Additionally, Human Rights Minister Natalius Pigai has urged legal teams to pursue a cassation or judicial review to ensure social justice for the victim.
