Military relocation options for PCS moves

Military personnel undergoing a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) have several options for relocating household goods and vehicles. For vehicle transportation, professional shipping services offer an alternative to driving long distances, which can be beneficial for families with multiple vehicles or limited drivers.

Regarding household goods, there are three primary moving methods. A Government-arranged move (GAM) involves the Department of Defense coordinating and paying for a commercial moving company, which is typically the standard for moves outside the continental United States. A Personally Procured Move (PPM), formerly known as a Do-It-Yourself (DITY) move, allows service members to manage their own arrangements and receive government reimbursement. Finally, a combination move allows for a mix of both, where some items are handled via PPM while larger furniture is managed through a GAM.
