Military service and veteran recognition honored in China and Taiwan

In China, veterans who have lived modest lives despite significant military achievements are being recognized. Wang Yuchang, a 90-year-old veteran who participated in the successful shoot-down of a U-2 reconnaissance aircraft in 1963, spent decades working as a department store clerk without disclosing his military honors. Similarly, Zhang Fuqing, a recipient of a special merit award for his actions during the Liberation War, lived a simple life in a remote mountainous area in Hubei. Li Wenxiang, another decorated veteran, spent decades working as a farmer and village official after his military service.

In Taiwan, Chiayi City held a ceremony for Military Day to honor individuals for their service to the military and the community. Deputy Mayor Chen Yongfeng presented awards to several individuals and military personnel for their support of soldiers and their families. The ceremony specifically highlighted the role of the military in disaster relief, noting the assistance provided by various army units during recent typhoon recovery efforts in the region.
