U.S. Army sergeant's wife deported to Honduras amid immigration crackdown
Cristy Maryori Villafranca-Trejo, the wife of active-duty U.S. Army Sgt. Hedar Leonel Turcios Juarez, was deported to Honduras on Monday. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed her removal, stating she had received due process. DHS officials noted that Villafranca-Trejo was issued a final order of removal by an immigration judge in 2017 after failing to appear at a hearing.
Sgt. Turcios Juarez stated that his wife did not receive notice of the 2017 hearing. He reported that she was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers on July 11 during a targeted operation outside a Walmart near Fort Bliss, Texas. The sergeant, who became a U.S. citizen in 2024, expressed difficulty balancing military duties with caring for their six-year-old daughter following the deportation.
An investigation by the Associated Press indicates that Villafranca-Trejo is at least the seventh spouse or parent of an active-duty service member deported under the current administration's immigration policies. The report also found that more than 50 immediate family members of U.S. troops have been placed in federal immigration detention since the administration rolled back certain protections for military families.
