Militärmusik Salzburg celebrates 70th anniversary

Militärmusik Salzburg is celebrating its 70th anniversary. Founded in 1956 in Elsbethen-Glasenbach with 20 musicians, the ensemble has become a staple of public life in Salzburg, performing at official receptions, ceremonies, and concerts.

The group moved from the Rainerkaserne to the Schwarzenbergkaserne in 2011. Key historical milestones include the year 2000, when Waltraud Stöger became the first woman to join the ensemble, and 2022, when Johann Schernthanner took leadership as military bandmaster.

The institution also survived a significant threat in 2014 when plans to abolish military music across Austria were halted following protests by musicians.
