Milk producers in Portugal face 72 million euro loss in 2026

Portuguese milk producers face a significant financial blow in 2026, with the Association of Milk Producers of Portugal (Aprolep) estimating that price drops will cost the sector approximately 72 million euros.

In mainland Portugal, cooperatives associated with Lactogal implemented a 1.5 cent per liter reduction starting August 1. In the Azores, specifically on the island of São Miguel, Prolacto and Insulac reduced prices by 2 cents and 1.5 cents per liter, respectively. These cuts are attributed to national and international market conditions, including milk powder prices and challenges in selling packaged milk.

Aprolep notes that the cumulative loss for 2026 is expected to reach 72 million euros, which includes a 60 million euro decrease compared to 2025 levels. The association highlighted that these losses occur alongside rising production costs for energy, feed, and fertilizers. Producers are currently seeking government intervention to address falling prices and rising operational expenses.
