Milky Way Swallows Four New Dwarf Galaxy Remnants Discovered by Turkish Astronomers
Researchers from Istanbul University’s Institute of Astronomy and Space Sciences combined data from the European Space Agency’s Gaia satellite with spectroscopic observations from the SDSS‑V project. Using machine‑learning classification and clustering techniques on about 1.4 million stars, they identified four previously unrecorded dwarf‑galaxy remnants (named FO1‑FO4) and a dispersed globular‑cluster remnant (FO5) within the Milky Way.
The findings, published in the *Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific*, reveal distinct chemical abundances and orbital dynamics that trace past merger events that built the Milky Way. Dr Olcay Plevne said, “Our main goal was to reveal the traces of satellite dwarf galaxies that the Milky Way has accreted through mergers.” The discovery adds new fossil structures to the galaxy’s evolutionary record and demonstrates the power of large‑scale astrometric and spectroscopic surveys combined with data‑science methods.
