Miller-Meeks and Bohannan debate tax and energy policies
Republican U.S. Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Democratic candidate Christina Bohannan engaged in a debate regarding Iowa’s first congressional district, focusing on tax policies, energy prices, and agricultural issues.
Bohannan criticized Miller-Meeks for supporting the “One Big Beautiful Bill” passed in July 2025, arguing it provided permanent tax cuts for the wealthy while offering only temporary relief through programs like no tax on tips and overtime, which are scheduled to expire in 2028. Miller-Meeks defended the legislation, highlighting the expansion of the child tax credit and Social Security tax deductions that do not expire.
The candidates also clashed over Bohannan’s previous voting record in the Iowa House of Representatives, specifically regarding legislation to reduce individual income taxes. Miller-Meeks further promoted the bill’s Rural Transformation Fund, which allocated $50 billion for national healthcare expansion, including $209 million for Iowa hospitals.
