Millet emerges as water-efficient crop option in Bolivia

Millet is emerging as a viable agricultural alternative in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, to combat water scarcity and extreme climate conditions. The crop is characterized by its short production cycle and low requirements for both water and soil fertility.

According to Agripac, the African-origin grain belongs to the Poaceae family, similar to corn and sorghum, but possesses superior adaptation to arid environments. Research indicates that millet requires less water than sorghum and can thrive even with rainfall accumulations below 70 millimeters. Approximately 500 hectares of the crop were established during the 2026 winter campaign to promote production diversification.
