Millvina Dean, last survivor of the Titanic, dies at 97
Millvina Dean, the last surviving passenger of the RMS Titanic, has passed away in Southampton, England, at the age of 97.
Dean was only two months old when the ship struck an iceberg on April 14, 1912. She was rescued as an infant, wrapped in a sack and lowered into a lifeboat amidst the freezing waters of the North Atlantic. While she was among the 706 survivors, her father was one of the 1,517 people who perished in the disaster.
Her family, third-class passengers from Southampton, had intended to relocate to Kansas City, Missouri, to start a new life. Due to a coal strike, they were transferred to the Titanic. Dean credited her father's quick actions for saving the family, as he moved them away from the third-class section toward lifeboats immediately after the collision.
