Millwall manager Alex Neil criticizes match stoppage over alleged racism
Millwall manager Alex Neil has drawn criticism following his comments regarding a match stoppage caused by alleged racist abuse during a Championship fixture against Swansea City. The match at The Den was halted for approximately seven minutes in the 65th minute after Swansea winger Eom Ji-sung, a South Korean international, was reportedly subjected to discriminatory chanting.
Neil expressed frustration with the interruption, stating, “I just don’t see the point [of stopping the game for alleged racist abuse... All it does is kill the momentum.” While acknowledging that the incident must be addressed by authorities, Neil suggested that suspending play does not resolve the underlying issue. He also noted that his perspective might have differed had his team been leading at the time of the stoppage.
Referee Edward Duckworth initiated protocols following the reports, and officials informed spectators via the stadium's public address system that police were reviewing CCTV footage to identify those responsible. Millwall ultimately lost the match 1-0 to Swansea City.
