Mevlid Jašarević faces US extradition request in Bosnia and Herzegovina

The United States has formally requested the extradition of Mevlid Jašarević from Bosnia and Herzegovina to face charges in a District of Columbia court. The request comes just as Jašarević was scheduled to be released following the completion of a 15-year prison sentence for a 2011 terrorist attack on the US Embassy in Sarajevo.

Jašarević was convicted for the October 28, 2011, attack, during which he fired approximately 105 rounds from an automatic weapon, injuring a police officer. The US indictment includes charges of attempted murder of US officials and employees, as well as destruction of property.

A hearing to determine extradition detention was held at the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina. While Jašarević's defense team has characterized the request as politically motivated and an eleventh-hour attempt to prevent his release, prosecutors argue that detention is necessary to prevent flight given the severity of the charges.

Separately, the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina issued a first-instance acquittal for Jašarević regarding separate allegations that he threatened prison staff and attempted to obstruct official duties in late 2024. This acquittal is not yet legally binding.
