Milton Dick elected President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union

Milton Dick, Speaker of the Australian House of Representatives, has been elected as the 32nd President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) for the 2026–2029 term. The election took place during the 153rd IPU Assembly in Arusha, Tanzania.

Dick secured 56 percent of the total votes, receiving 182 votes. He defeated Sahiba Gafarova, Speaker of the Milli Majlis of Azerbaijan, who received 124 votes, and Chilean Senator Rojo Edwards Silva, who received 21 votes. Dick succeeds the outgoing president, Dr. Tulia Ackson of Tanzania.

In his platform, Dick emphasized inclusive leadership, advocating for greater recognition of the Pacific region and smaller nations within the IPU’s decision-making processes. He aims to ensure that parliaments with limited international influence have a voice in global discussions.

Following the announcement, the San Marino delegation extended an invitation to Dick to visit the Republic and meet with its highest institutional authorities. Additionally, Indonesian House Speaker Puan Maharani expressed hope that Dick’s leadership would strengthen the organization’s ability to address complex geopolitical, economic, and socio-cultural challenges.
