Milton Viera, former Olympiacos and AEK star, dies at 80
Milton Viera, a prominent Uruguayan footballer who became a significant figure in Greek football during the 1970s, has passed away at the age of 80. He died peacefully in his sleep in Montevideo.
Viera is remembered for his successful stints with two of Greece’s major clubs: Olympiacos and AEK Athens. Playing for Olympiacos from 1972 to 1977, he won three consecutive Greek championships (1973, 1974, 1975) and two Greek Cups (1973, 1975). He later joined AEK Athens, where he played from 1977 to 1979, securing two more league titles (1978, 1979) and one Greek Cup (1978).
Before moving to Europe, Viera played for major South American clubs including Nacional and Peñarol. He was also a member of the Uruguay national team that participated in the 1966 FIFA World Cup. A notable moment in his career occurred in 1975 when he played in a World XI match alongside legends such as Pelé, Johan Cruyff, and Eusebio.
Olympiacos released a statement expressing their sadness, noting that Viera was a player who wore the red-and-white jersey with pride and was deeply loved by the fans.
