Mimmo Battaglia analyses Reggio Calabria election loss and waste management challenges

Former mayor and Democratic Party figure Mimmo Battaglia reflected on the centre‑left’s heavy defeat in the Reggio Calabria municipal election, acknowledging that twelve years of governance had led to voter fatigue. He cited low political participation, a reduced number of mayoral candidates, and the advantage the centre‑right gained from a national government led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and a regional administration under President Antonino Occhiuto.

Battaglia also warned that the new administration will face difficult issues, particularly waste management, noting that resolving the city’s rubbish problems will not be easy under the incoming leadership.
