Anwar Ibrahim meets Min Aung Hlaing to discuss ASEAN and repatriation

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim met with Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing in Putrajaya to discuss bilateral relations, economic cooperation, and the repatriation of Myanmar nationals. Anwar expressed Malaysia's commitment to supporting Myanmar's reintegration into ASEAN, despite the country's ongoing political exclusion following the 2021 military coup.

A major focus of the discussions was the repatriation of Myanmar citizens currently held in Malaysian immigration detention centers. Officials reported that over 10,493 Myanmar nationals have already been returned to their home country. Min Aung Hlaing pledged to accelerate this process, stating that Myanmar would deploy navy ships to facilitate the return of its citizens. Notably, the Myanmar government has agreed to cover the costs associated with these repatriations.

Economic ties were also a key topic, with reports indicating that bilateral trade between the two nations has increased by more than 140% year-on-year. While the leaders pledged to deepen cooperation in sectors such as trade, energy, and agriculture, the meetings have faced criticism from human rights groups and political entities. Critics expressed concerns regarding the safety of returnees and the potential normalization of the Myanmar military leadership amidst an ongoing civil war.
