Min Jin Lee releases new novel American Hagwon
Author Min Jin Lee has released her new novel, American Hagwon, the third installment in a planned four-book series exploring the Korean diaspora. The work, which took nearly a decade to complete, exceeds 600 pages.
Set between 1992 and 2007, the story follows the Koh family as they navigate life across the United States, Australia, and South Korea. The narrative focuses on the complexities of immigration, the pursuit of education, and the family's experiences with the Korean tutoring system, known as hagwons.
Lee's previous novel, Pachinko, was a finalist for the National Book Award. This new volume examines the domestic lives of the Koh family, including parents John and Helen and their three children, as they face professional betrayals and the challenges of integrating into new school systems.
