Mina La Prieta water levels drop 50 meters in Mexico
Authorities in Hidalgo del Parral are investigating a significant anomaly at Mina La Prieta, where water levels have dropped by approximately 50 meters. Mayor Salvador Calderón Aguirre announced that the municipality, in coordination with the Municipal Water and Sanitation Board, will bring in specialized geologists and engineers to diagnose the cause.
To maintain hydraulic operations, pumping equipment has been submerged to greater depths. While there is speculation regarding a potential underground fault or crack causing leaks, officials stated there is currently no technical evidence to confirm this theory. The mayor assured the public that there is no immediate danger to the population.
Prolonged drought and a lack of rainfall in recent years are considered primary factors, as the mining complex functions as a catchment basin that relies on rainwater to maintain its water table. Authorities will continue monitoring the site to determine the exact nature of the event.
