Minami-Osawa Station area to undergo public space revitalization

Hachioji City, Mitsui Fudosan, and Tokyo Metropolitan University have entered into a joint research agreement to revitalize the public spaces surrounding Minami-Osawa Station on the Keio Sagamihara Line. The initiative aims to transform the station's pedestrian areas from simple transit corridors into “michi-hiroba” (street plazas) designed for staying, interacting, and creating local vibrancy.

The project seeks to utilize the “Hokomichi” system, which allows for the installation of street furniture like benches and tables on pedestrian-friendly roads. This effort coincides with Mitsui Fudosan’s plans to rebuild and renew Mitsui Outlet Park Tama Minami-Osawa, scheduled for opening in 2028.

As part of the research, social experiments and community events are scheduled to begin in September 2026. These tests will involve placing street furniture, playgrounds, and food trucks in the station area to evaluate pedestrian safety, social interaction, and the effectiveness of creating lively public spaces.
